Antenatal clinics

Antenatal clinics are run by the midwives on a Wednesday morning, and 1.30 and 2.30 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon jointly by the midwives and the doctor. If you are pregnant or you have any pregnancy related problems the Midwives will be happy to see you. An appointment can be made as usual at the Reception desk.

Baby Clinic

Baby Clinics are held on a Tuesday between 11.30 and 1.00 p.m. These clinics are run by the Health Visitor and a doctor. These Baby Clinics are for well babies only, for routine assessments and checks, and immunisations. If your baby is unwell please make an appointment to see a doctor in a normal surgery.  

Well Woman Clinic

Well Woman clinics are run on a Monday afternoon by the doctor and the nursing sister, and Thursday by the nursing sister only. These clinics are by appointment only. The intention is that the Monday run clinic deals with more complicated problems including contraception, menstrual and menopause problems.

Routine smears are generally done in the Thursday nurse run clinic but the nurse can also deal with contraception and general issues. The Well Woman clinic deals with all gynaecological problems as well as assisting with any family related problems. An appointment can be made through reception.

Cardiology/Hypertension Clinic

The Cardiology/Hypertension Clinic is run by the nursing sister throughout the week and is by appointment only. This clinic deals with the routine follow-up of heart disease, angina, hypertension and other cardiological problems 

The Diabetes Clinic

The Diabetes Clinic is run throughout the week by the nursing sisters. This clinic is by appointment only and deals with the routine follow-up and review of patients with diabetes. Any diabetes related problems can be dealt with in this clinic 

Asthma Clinic

The Asthma clinic is run throughout the week by the nursing sister and is by appointment only. A full range of assessments and treatments are available for all people with asthma, both adult and child.  

Weight Reduction Clinic

The Weight Reduction clinic is run by the nursing sisters throughout the week, by appointment. If you have problems with your weight the nurse will be happy to advise and support you. 

Travel Advice

Please make an appointment with the practice nursing sisters who will be happy to discuss your travel vaccination requirements and arrange for your vaccinations. We are an approved Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  

Immunisations

A full range of immunisations for both adults and children is available. Please make an appointment with the practice nursing sister who will advise and arrange for any immunisations to be given. Most baby immunisations are carried out routinely in the Tuesday 'Baby Clinic', and pre-school boosters on Wednesday afternoons, between 3pm and 4pm.  

Social Services

The practice's weekly Social Services surgery is no longer running. If you require advice or support from Social Services, please contact Rotherham MB Council direct on Rotherham 382121 and ask for Social Services. 

Family Planning/Pregancy Advice

Advice is available from the practice nursing sisters and the doctors. Please remember that all requests are treated in the strictest confidence, so do not be afraid to speak to one of our health professionals.

Please note that Dr Brynes does not prescribe emergency contraception ('the morning after pill') nor refer for termination of pregnancy. Please ask to see a different doctor if seeking such advice.

Contraception advice is also available at the Central Family Planning Clinic, which is now located at Rotherham's new Community Health Centre, Greasbrough Road. To make an appointment please telephone Rotherham 423129.

Pregnancy Advisory Service:
If you find you have an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy and need further advice, your doctor may refer you to Rotherham's Pregnancy Advisory Service, at Rotherham Hospital. Alternatively, you can make your own appointment to be seen, without a referral from your GP. Please telephone the service on Rotherham 304542 (or Freephone 08000 730958).  

Minor Surgery / Cryotherapy Clinics

Minor Surgery, Skin Surgery and Cryotherapy clinics are run on a monthly basis at the surgery. Please see your doctor if you have any skin lumps or bumps you may be concerned about, and if surgery is advisable you will be referred to the appropriate clinic. 

Anticoagulation treatment monitoring

Patients on anticoagulation treatment (warfarin) can now have their regular monitoring blood tests and dosage adjustment carried out at the surgery. If you are currently attending a hospital anticoagulation monitoring clinic and would like to take advantage of this service, please speak to your doctor.  

Rheumatology treatment monitoring

Some patients under the care of the Rheumatology Department require regular blood tests to monitor the safety of their treatment. Under a 'shared care' protocol, we are now starting to undertake monitoring blood tests for some patients. If you would like to use this service, please speak to your hospital specialist at your next visit and ask if you could have your blood test monitoring carried out here at the surgery.  

Counselling

The practice currently has 3 counsellors who each hold weekly clinics. Please inform your doctor if you feel you need to speak to a counsellor about any problems you may be having, and they will arrange for an appointment to be made for you.

Graduate Mental Health Workers

Our Primary Care Mental Health Team also benefits from having specialised professionals (Graduate Mental Health Workers) trained to support and help people with mild mental difficulties, such as stress, anxiety or mild depression. Please speak to your doctor if you would like help for such problems.

Primary Care Mental Health Practitioners

Also part of our Primary Care Mental Health Team are specialist nurses, who can offer short term therapeutic interventions for people with a range of moderate mental health difficulties. They provide individual treatment sessions aimed at helping people understand their difficulties and learn techniques to manage them effectively. Again, please speak to your doctor if you would like help.

Substance Misuse Clinic

Held on Tuesdays in conjunction with a specialist drugs worker or nurse, by appointment only. The service is available to anyone aged 21 or over with with substance misuse problems. Appointments for initial assessment with the Specialist Nurse can be made in the normal way at reception. If you wish to discuss your problem first with a doctor, please make an appointment with either Dr Brynes or Dr Jones, who are the clinical leads for substance misuse in the practice.

Alcohol Counselling Service

Alcohol Counselling is available to anyone who feels they may have an alcohol problem. Our Alcohol Counsellor runs a clinic once a week for assessment and follow-up, with access to support from Rotherham's Specialist Alcohol Services. Your doctor can refer you to the counsellor, or if you wish, you can make an appointment yourself by telephoning the Primary Care Alcohol Service on Rotherham (01709) 304919.

Routine Antenatal Care

As soon as you learn that you are pregnant, please ask for an appointment with a midwife. The receptionists will pass on your details to the midwife, who will contact you and arrange for you first 'booking' appointment. For this first appointment the midwife will usually visit you in your own home.

To make your appointment, either call in at Reception or telephone 0844 815 1956. Midwives prefer to see you as early in your pregnancy as is possible, ideally before eight weeks from your last period. If you have already 'booked in' with your midwife and need advice, please contact her on the number she will have given you.

Pre-Conception Advice  

If you are thinking about starting a family, and you would like pre-conception advice, please ask for an appointment to see a midwife. Appointments can be made through Reception in the normal way 

Aquanatal Classes  

Aquanatal Classes are a really fun way to keep fit during your pregnancy. They are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Rotherham Leisure Complex (near St. Anne's roundabout) between 11am and 12 midday. Booking is recommended to avoid disappointment - telephone the centre on Rotherham (01709) 722555 to reserve your place. Ask your midwife if you would like to know more about this 

Parentcraft Classes  

Parentcraft classes are provided for women from about the 28th week of pregnancy onwards. Please ask your midwife if you would like further information about these classes, which provide advice, and help you prepare for labour, delivery, breast-feeding and looking after your newborn baby.  

Sickness Certificates

You do not require a doctor's sickness certificate for any illness lasting seven days or less. Your employer may however require you to complete a self-certification form (SC2) which is available from your employer or on the HMRC website.

Evidence that you are sick

If you are sick for more than seven days, your employer can ask you to give them some form of medical evidence to support payment of SSP (statutory sick pay).

It is up to your employer to decide whether you are incapable of work. A medical certificate, now called a 'Statement of Fitness for Work’ (see below) from your doctor is strong evidence that you are sick and would normally be accepted, unless there is evidence to prove otherwise.

You could also provide evidence from someone who is not a medical practitioner, e.g. a dentist. Your employer will decide whether or not this evidence is acceptable. If your employer has any doubts, they may still ask for a medical certificate from your GP.

Statement of Fitness for Work - ’Fit Note'

The 'fit note' was introduced on 6 April 2010. With your employer's support, the note will help you return to work sooner by providing more information about the effects of your illness or injury.
